Crafting Family Adventures Together.

Hello. My name is Jon Brackenbury, and I am the founder of East West Van Conversions. I have worked as an automotive structural design engineer for the past 25 years with some of the world's largest automotive companies, including Ford, GM, Nissan, and Jaguar Land Rover.

I have spent many years traveling and exploring the remote outdoors, from traversing the Australian continent in a 40-year-old 4WD with a rooftop tent (many years ago!) to recently exploring Europe with my now family of four. Initially, we travelled in a long-wheelbase (LWB) T5 campervan, but now have an L3 H2 Fiat Ducato, which I converted myself.

I decided to build a van because of the very few four-berth vans currently available on the market which do not have a pop top roof. While pop tops may look appealing and provide the necessary head height for walking around, they do not meet my needs. They can be freezing cold and damp during colder months and unbearably hot in the summer. Additionally, the lack of garage space in the T5, when the rock-and-roll bed is deployed, makes it impractical to carry barbecues, bikes, and other equipment considered essential for a great time on the road.

I consider the van I designed and built to be the ultimate compromise. It’s small enough to allow me to drive it daily as my regular mode of transport whilst being big enough to provide sleeping and seating for four people while maintaining its full garage capacity. Furthermore with all the electrical and plumbing systems being located neatly out of the garage area, allows for a huge amount of gear to be stored without any expensive and beautiful built-in woodwork getting damaged or scratched!

The only significant compromise is the lack of an onboard washroom, but I view this as a 'nice to have’ as families with younger children tend to stay at designated campsites that provide all the necessary facilities they require. For times when you are off-grid, there is the option of having an outside shower plumbed in and a porta-loo for emergencies.

With my engineering background and experience, I have designed my van to be built very quickly and repeatedly, keeping costs and weight to a minimum. I think you will agree that the costs and lead times advertised on this site speak for themselves!

Safe travels.

Jon.
